Greenshot is an elegant screen capture tool for Windows that offers many of the same features as its proprietary counterparts. Greenshot offers default print screen settings with hotkey combinations that capture a screen, a window, or a region of either. Greenshot also lets you send an image to a built-in image editor, copy it to the clipboard, send it to your printer, export it to Microsoft Office, or upload it to a cloud-based program (Confluence, Box.com, Dropbox, Flick, Imgur without/with password, JIRA, Picasa-Web). And Greenshot offers some premium features like obfuscate, which lets you render a portion of the screen unreadable by pixilation or by blurring, and optical character recognition (OCR). Overall, we love Greenshot to capture basic screen elements and for letting us personalize the hot-key defaults we use when doing so.

Using Greenshot is effortless; it took just a few minutes to install and launch. Upon launch, we noticed four hotkey combinations that are preset to capture images and the option to personalize them. In Greenshot, after you select an image it turns green momentarily and then produces a camera shutter sound to let you know your image was created. And, once you’ve taken a shot and captured it to your desired format (JPEG, BMP, GIF and PNG), you can embellish the shot with arrows, text, etc. Besides the ability to set preset formats, you have the option to configure Greenshot to save your images directly to the clipboard or send them to the printer.
